The Pilot in Command is so designated as the PIC for a flight or series of flights in accordance to the principals and procedures as required by FAR Part 135. The PIC is responsible for the safe conduct of flights to which he/she is assigned. The PIC is the final authority in the operation of the aircraft. Exercises Operational Control on the Tier 2 level as described in Chapter 5 of this manual. The PIC is directly supervised by the Base Lead Pilot and/or the Chief Pilot. The PIC supervises the functions of any other Captain and/or First Officer during flight. The PIC must meet minimum qualifications as specified by Federal Aviation Regulation Part 135.243(b).


  • Determines that he/she and his First Officer are adequately rested in accordance with FAR flight and duty restrictions and in proper dress.
  • Ensures that the aircraft is clean and prepared for flight with all provisions on board for the safety and comfort of passengers and crew.
  • Supervises the First Officer in any duties necessary for the smooth, safe and efficient operation of the aircraft.
  • Coordinates the functions of all flight crew members assigned to the flight, shares his/her knowledge, monitors performance and evaluates their potential for advancement.
  • Makes decisions as necessary to start, delay, cancel the flight, or deviate from planned or destination when operating conditions dictate.
  • Obtains briefing on the purpose of the flight, weather, operating, procedures and any special instructions, and plans flight assignments.
  • Coordinates with company dispatch the preparation of flight plan considering such factors as altitude, terrain, weather, range, weight, cruise control data, airport facilities and navigational aids.
  • Insures proper flight kit is aboard. The flight kit are those items as enumerated in this manual, tab 6 – Flight Preparations, under Operational Information Changes and, as appropriate, tab 12 – International Operations, under Aircraft and Crew, subparagraph (c).
  • Insures that required airworthiness inspections are current and the aircraft is equipped for the flight assignment.
  • Inspects or supervises preflight inspection of the aircraft for mechanical and structural soundness plus proper operation of communications and navigational equipment to also include the following:
    1. Airworthiness Certificate
    2. Aircraft Registration
    3. Aircraft Weight & Balance (and Equipment List)
    4. Radio Telephone Station Permit
    5. Aircraft Flight Manual
    6. Aircraft Check List
    7. General Operations Manual
    8. Aircraft Discrepancy Log
    9. Emergency Procedures (one for each passenger)
    10. Flashlight (of at least two “D” size)
    11. Appropriate Charts (current)
    12. Two microphones, two headsets (or one headset and one speaker)
    13. Minimum Equipment List with letter of authorization issued by FAA Flight Standards District Office
  • Supervises loading and distribution of cargo and passengers. Assures that carry on baggage is placed in cargo area or under seats, if such seats should contain an approved restraining bar, and further assure such baggage cannot slide forward with sudden stoppage of aircraft. Determine that weight and balance are within prescribed limitations, fills out a Flight Manifest, and assures that copies of the Manifest are delivered to the Chief Pilot for filing.
  • Insures that emergency equipment such as life rafts, life vests, etc. as well as provisions for passenger comfort are aboard, and insures that all cargo is properly secured.
  • Ensures flight plans are filed and closed in accordance with the procedures in this manual and per Operations Specifications.
  • Operates aircraft at favorable altitudes taking into account turbulence, oxygen requirements and comfort of passengers during flight.
  • Insures the preparation of flight logs, reporting of mechanical irregularities, and recording of maintenance, by maintenance personnel when maintenance is performed en route.
  • May delegate PIC functions to other personnel, but retains responsibility.
  • Will assure that all cargo doors are secured so that inadvertent opening in flight is avoided. He/she will also assure that all cargo and exterior lockers, that have warning lights or horns, are checked to be sure they are operating properly.
  • Determines which leg will be operated under part 91 or part 135 based upon FARs and Company guidelines.
  • Will assign a crew member or passenger prior to takeoff to assist a handicapped person during emergency evacuation of the aircraft. However, he/she will assume the responsibility himself.
  • Will brief, or assign a crewmember to brief, all passengers prior to takeoff, showing all exits, safety belt operation, flotation gear, its location and use (when necessary), refer passengers to the emergency procedures card located in the seat pocket, and review smoking requirements.
  • All pilots prior to takeoff or landing will assure, by checking the aircraft Flight Manual and the Airport Advisories, that the usable portion of the active runway is of adequate length for the safe takeoff or landing of the aircraft, considering its takeoff weight and center of gravity.
  • In accordance with FAR 135.115, it shall be the responsibility of the pilot in command to brief any passenger occupying a pilot’s seat on the regulation prohibiting passengers from manipulating flight controls during flight unless that person is a qualified employed pilot, the certificate holder or qualified representative of the administrator who has the permission of the pilot in command and is checking flight operations.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the Company Manual, Federal Aviation Administration Regulations, Operations Specifications, Flight Manuals, and other instructions pertinent to his duties.
  • Assumes other duties as may be assigned


  • Must reside or be willing to relocate to San Antonio, TX
  • Must hold or be able to attain King Air B200 with C90 Differences Qualification
  • Hold or be eligible to hold, and unrestricted FAA ATP certificate
  • Meet or exceed the following total flight experience:
    • Total time – 2500 hours Airplane
    • Multi-Engine  - 500 hours airplane multi-engine land
    • PIC – 1000 Airplane
    • In Type – 100 hours
  • Must hold of be able to attain a First Class Medical Certificate and maintain First Class Privileges
